Excerpt from The Cyclopaedia, or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, Vol. 20 of 39 A lime-kiln of this fort is defcribed in count Rumford's Eifays, which is in poifellion of the Dublin Society, as well as the principal objects that ought to be had in view in con ilrufting of the kiln pointed out the firl't of which is, to caufe the fuel to burn in inch a manner as to confume the fmoke, which has here been done by obliging the fmoke to defcendand pais through the fire, in order that as much heat as pofiible might be generated. Secondly, to caufe the flame and hot vapour, which rife from the fire, to come in Contaet with the lime-{tone by a very large furfaee, in order to economize the heat, and prevent its going off into the at mofphere; which was done by making the body of the kiln in the form of a hollow truncated cone, and very high in proportion to its diameter; and by filling it quite up to the top with lime-hone, the fire being made to enter near the bottom of the cone.
