Robert Wodrow, Vol. 3: Minister of Eastwood, and Author of the History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland Without presuming to anticipate the judgment of the public on the general character of the Correspondence now completed, the Edi tor may be allowed to remark, that, besides opening up an interesting page in the ecclesiastical history of our country, of which little is known, and gratifying our natural curiosity to see how the events of which we have read, were regarded and spoken of by those who lived at the time when they happened, - these letters afford evi dence of the honourable estimation in which the Historian of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland was held by his contempora ries. That his ministerial abilities were highly appreciated, may be inferred from his having been so frequently invited to occupy larger spheres of usefulness. He received calls, at various periods, to Glasgow, Stirling, and Renfrew; but such was his attachment to his flock, and such his desire for leisure to prosecute his literary labours, that he preferred to the last the quiet seclusion of East wood, a small parish in the neighbourhood of Glasgow.
