Description

This book is about the Spanish conquest near Columbia, where the native Chibchas people were conquered. It includes a translation of Chibchas' calendar (the Spaniards called the Chibchas - Muyscas (or 'man' in Spanish), an index of sovereign deities, and an index of names in places. Sir Clements Robert Markham (1830-1916) after serving on the Franklin search expedition in the Arctic regions, resigned from the Royal Navy to explore the eastern slopes of the Andes. He held key positions in the Hakluyt Society and the Royal Geographic Society, and collected first-hand information on a wide variety of topics, including the importance of Andean quinine - a cure for malaria - for the East India Company (he also did explorations and held administrative posts in India).
