Author Biography:

Payel Bhattacharya Madero’s journey into medical reimbursement began when her mom, Chandana Basu, started a medical billing service after receiving training in St Louis. Although she was 12 at the time, she was fascinated with medical codesets and taught herself to code with coding manuals, health insurance plan manuals, and a medical dictionary. Every weekend and school break Madero worked with her mom to build the medical billing service that eventually expanded to over 20 states with a variety of medical specialties and surgery centers. After Madero finished college, she joined Basu to take the company public. Within a year they had secured over $2 million to develop a practice management software to facilitate accurate medical billing and coding for physician’s offices for which she was a software architect. Madero completed a Master’s Degree in Health Services Management in from Keller's Graduate school in 2007. Keller Graduate School asked her to join their team as an instructor and she never went back to the corporate world. In an effort to unite her passion for Health IT and Medical Reimbursement and her new love for teaching., Madero became an RHIT professional after completing the Health Information Technology Associate’s Degree in Health Information Technology at DeVry University in 2009. Madero brought her taught-herself-coding strategies to the classroom to help students grasp challenging HIT and HIM concepts. She has also contributed to several published textbooks including Insurance Handbook for the Medical Office, 13th and 14th editions, and Kinn’s The Medical Assistant: An Applied Approach, 13th edition. She currently is a program chair for a growing Medical Coding and Billing Certificate Program.
