Illustrated with some 600 black-and-white photographs, maps, and plans, this volume details the evolution of the design of Egyptian columns from the earliest structures to the columns in buildings erected by the Roman emperors. Themes addressed range from the symbolic meaning to the construction and decoration.

Author Biography:

The author, J. Peter Phillips, is an amateur Egyptologist who has lectured widely on this topic throughout the UK. His work has been enthusiastically endorsed by Rosalind Janssen, of University College London, who has contributed a Foreword to the book.
