Description

1901. With a critical introduction by Maurice Hewlett. A frontispiece and numerous other portraits with descriptive notes by Octave Uzanne. Marie-Henri Beyle, who called himself Stendhal, was one of the great early- to mid-19th century French novelists and writers. He is best known for his masterpieces Le Rouge Et Le Noir (The Red and the Black) and The Charterhouse of Parma. He also wrote travel books, literature, art criticism and biographies of W.A. Mozart and Joseph Haydn. After the fall of the French empire Stendhal settled in Italy. His travel book, Rome, Naples Et Florence En 1817, was the first book he published under the name of Stendhal. He later returned to Paris and spent the rest of his life writing successfully and prolifically. In this classic work Stendhal narrates a young aristocrat's adventures in Napoleon's army and in the court of Parma, illuminating in the process the whole cloth of European history.
