I picked up The Caligula Effect 2 on a whim, thinking it might be a bit of a home-brand Persona, but it actually surprised me. I think it's important to say right away that the visuals are rough. It looks and runs like a PS2 game, but literally rather than some septic hyperbole you'll find on gaming forums. If that bothers you, be warned. But if you can get past that you will find a gem of an RPG with a story focused on regret and how we are motivated by it – either to deal with it, or run away from it – and whether its right to hide from it if that will make you happy. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I came to care for the characters, and how invested in the story I became. There were plenty of solid chuckles in a fairly decent translation, too. And I have to end this by saying it has an absolutely glorious soundtrack that drills into your brain and stays there.
