"Definitely Worth A Watch"

This is a great film. And it's not just me who's saying it; it's been well received by critics and viewers alike. It was supervised by an up-and-coming director, Mamoru Hosoda, known for his various works, including the feature films, ‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,’ ‘Summer Wars’ and ‘Wolf Children’. This film fares better than those, but still retains the unique characteristics that set his films apart. It was everything I wanted from a grunty, Japanese folklore-infused film.

Interestly, I felt the film's progression matched the development of film's protagonist; at the start, when he was young, I wasn't sure if it had potential; as he matured, I grew to like it, and was finally left with a sense of respect. It did break briefly for a romantic stint that I thought would break its focus, but it got back to work and finished strong.

This got me thinking: was this intentional- Or does it simply reflect the directors' life preferences- Either way, it felt very directed towards young Japanese men.

Overall, I loved this film for what it was, including all the questions it left unanswered for me. Definitely worth a watch if you enjoyed the unearthly world of Spirited Away or need more intense male protagonists in your life.
