Description

Excerpt from The Boundary Line Between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, From the Merrimack River to the Connecticut: A Paper Read Before the Old Residents' Historical Association of Lowell, on December 21, 1893, the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Formation of the Society I have mentioned these trivial facts of a personal nature in order to show that once I knew your city well enough to entitle me now to be called almost a Lowell boy by adoption, or, as they say in the army, by brevet; and, if it were possible for a man to have two native places, I should certainly claim this city as one of them. These introductory remarks may not be in their character sufficiently historical to meet the needs of this occasion, but they give the recollections of an Old Resident surely, and so they are in keeping with a part of the name of your association. In my paper to-night I purpose to call your attention to a controversy that, more than a century and a half ago, was waged in the Merrimack Valley for many a year, and formed then one of the burning questions of the day. For a long time the dispute kept a large number of towns in wavering uncertainty whether they belonged to the vince of Massachusetts or to that of New Hampshire.
