The Book of Withycombe by Chris Boyles

This is another book in the Halsgrove Parish History series, reminding us of the people and events that have made our communities what they are today - celebrating the past and providing a stepping stone to the future. The photographs in this unique volume, many of them previously unpublished, are a vital record of the history and inhabitants of this ancient settlement brought together from across the community. Withycombe lies on Exmoor's north-eastern edge, between Old Cleeve and Dunster, with only nearby Carhampton between it and the sea. Although largely unspoilt, it is bypassed by most visitors as they speed on to Minehead, catching sight perhaps of the striking church tower, white against the darker backdrop of the hills. While traditional hill farms occupy the southern part of the parish, the village itself mostly follows the brook that made Withycombe suitable for habitation and gave it its name: the valley of the willows. The Book of Withycombe recounts the history of the parish from prehistoric times to the present day, bringing the reader face to face with its ordinary (and sometimes extraordinary!) inhabitants, from gentleman farmers and lords of the manor to blacksmiths, cobblers and farm labourers. All this, and much more, is detailed in this 160 page book, copiously illustrated throughout with over 250 historic photographs of the places and people who have made up the thriving community of Withycombe and its surrounding parish.
