Description

Some of the modern epidemics experienced in these contemporary times had their origins in certain parts of China. However, as The Black Death in the Fourteenth Century reveals, one of the most terrible pandemics to of all time also started in the same Asian nation. But that is not the only compelling fact that this book contains. This edition is a translation from the German original, written by J. F. C. Hecker, M.D. and published in 1832. The English version, translated by B.G. Babington, M.D. and released to the public in 1833, is a faithful reproduction of and includes a few extracts of a rare work regarding the "causes of universal diseases." This inclusion is due to the Dr. Babington's aim to widen medical perspectives on the cause and spread of epidemics through the translation of Dr. Hecker's book. What makes this work interesting is that it includes facts that, at the time, have never been widely known. One of these is the author's suggestion that the name "black death" is the result of an erroneous Latin translation of the term. It should be mentioned that this volume includes some observations or explanations that would no longer be acceptable in modern medicine. These comments, such as the influence of "astral and telluric powers" in the spread of disease, simply demonstrate the level at which science and the medical arts were at the time. This is a recommended read for historians and medical professionals and students wishing to get more insights on the development and spread of the a legendary pandemic of such magnitude that it remains unforgotten hundreds of years later.
