Description

The Balancer⸺ Preview Flashing red and blue police lights on the evening television news serve as an all too frequent reminder of yet another mass killing. As we stare in disbelief at the casualties being hauled on gurneys to the ambulances awaiting them, we can't help but ask, "When will it all end?" Nobody, from the president down, seems to have an answer. Under the cover of a science fiction novel, the author has crafted a fast-paced, complex, social commentary centering on this escalating problem of mass homicides and the central character's attempt at finding a solution to end them. It extends over three continents and covers a number of other current issues such as medical ethics, international tensions, undocumented immigrants, violent street protesters, police shootings, and even the #Me Too movement. This book is not for the tyro. If scientific vocabulary is in your comfort zone, you will love it. Written by a physician, it will challenge you to think about serious matters facing us right now and suggests paths that our society must choose to proceed. The story moves quickly from passus to passus, with crisply defined brakes. The chapter organization makes it easy to read for someone whose leisure time is limited, but make certain that your dictionary is at hand. Though the subject matter is serious, the author's sense of humor occasionally slips through, providing relief from otherwise thought-provoking reading. Scholarly without being stuffy, Dr. Geissinger's novel offers you a mini- seminar on hot topics of discussion in third- millennium America. If you like your protagonists smart and tough, the Balancer is for you. Colonel Robert L. Doherty, Esq./C.P.A. Diplomat and Fellow, American College of Forensic Examiners

Author Biography:

James D. Geissinger Jr., M.D. is a board-certified neurosurgeon and a member of the American College of Surgeons. He has a BS degree from the Un South Dakota and an MD degree from Northwestern. Post graduate training was spent at Un of Iowa (neurology) and Northwestern (neurosurgery). His premature retirement from clinical practice was prompted by illness. Throughout his professional life he also enjoyed teaching medical students and resident physicians in addition to clinical research and authoring articles for the neurological literature. As one who has always enjoyed being physically active in the outdoors he then turned to raising purebred Beefmaster cattle on his Florida ranch for the ensuing 20 years. In later years the doctor's long hours spent in his workshop were very self-gratifying as evidenced by the production of museum- quality furniture, including beautiful Windsor chairs. The author's autobiography, Memoirs of a Neurosurgeon─ A Perspective from the "Lucky Few" Generation, captures the dramatic advancements in medical technology and neurosurgery during the latter half of the 20th century. His novel, The Balancer, addresses the social dilemma concerning a solution to the mass murderer problem. Dr. Robert L Doherty is an attorney, CPA and, in recent years, an adjunct professor of business law and international business at Florida State University. He was a tenured professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and taught at Princeton University as a postdoctoral fellow. He holds advanced degrees in accounting, business administration, public administration, and several foreign languages. He also served as an army officer and diplomat for nearly 32 years, retiring as a colonel. As a Diplomat and Fellow, he was named to the Legal Advisory Board of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute in 2012. W.B. Devarieux is a well-recognized teacher and artist whose exhibited work focuses primarily on the natural beauty of Florida's Forgotten Coast.
