Description

Excerpt from The Apostolic Origin of Episcopacy Asserted, in a Series of Letters, Addressed to the Rev. Dr. Miller, Vol. 1: One of the Pastors of the United Presbyterian Churches in the City of New-York Prove, as we suppose, that no argument can he founded upon the use of the word Bishop, in favour of Episcopal superiority in the original constitution of the church, (for of that onlv he was speaking) that title being applied to Presbyters even after the government was Episcopal, then he will stand clear of contradiction, and in no other way that I can see, can he be made consistent. It certainly is but fair and candid, after a man has explicitly declared his sentiments, not to lay hold of any loose, ambi gnous expressions, and interpret them contrary to his avowed sentiments. It would be an easy mat ter, in this way, to make almost any writer contra dict himself; for there are few who write much as jerome did, who are always precise and definite.
