Description

The Anabaptists were at the radical utopian edge of the Protestant reformation, with followers who set up communities all over northern Europe. Because of their social and political views (anti-state, pro-communal property holding) and because it recruited followers from among the poorest peasants in Europe, they were ruthlessly repressed by Catholic, Lutherian and secular authorities alike. Fully revised since its publication in German, The Anabaptists takes account of the most recent historiography on the subject, including a new section on the emergence of Anabaptism in England. It also includes a selection of primary sources together with a full listing of important Anabaptist works.

Author Biography:

Hans-Jürgen Goertz is Professor of Social and Economic History at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and a leading scholar of the radical wing of the Reformation.
