Description

This study analyses the transformations undergone by the idea of "the modern" in Brazilian, Portuguese, Mozambican, Morrocan and Carribean modernist literatures. Through his analysis of a range of theoretical and fictional texts, Luis Madureira explores the philosophical and political implications of the encounter between postcolonial and postmodernist perspectives. Examining the links between modernist aesthetics and ideas of "development" and "national culture", Madureira's study aspires to move beyond the late 1990s theoretical impasse between the global and the local towards a radically different position.
