It was due to the fact that the spirit of patriotic enthusiasm among the young men of Massachusetts had overcome popular ridicule, had swept beyond the dress tunic and bouquet - in-the - gun-barrel stage of military existence, and had produced a body of soldiers. Dress uniforms had been for years discarded for camp work, applied tactics had taken the place of parade, and kriegsp'iel and rifle practice had elbowed out social events.
