What a delight to be able to see this fantastic drama again. It made such an impression on me when IĀ saw it on TV so many years ago. IĀ appreciate it so much more now though.

Tenko tells the story of British women in a Japanese internment camp in Singapore. It contains quality performances and addresses many of the themes of hardship, survival and friendship in a realistic and engaging way. Has aged relatively well. Highly recommended if you enjoy quality drama about the human condition under adversity.

BBC TV had achieved worldwide success in the 1970s with wartime dramas such as ‘Secret Army’ & ‘Colditz’, but 1981 saw their coverage of the events of WWII expand with the arrival of Lavinia Warner’s acclaimed series ‘Tenko’.

Based on real-life experiences, ‘Tenko’ is the powerful story of a group of ex-pat European women living in Singapore, whose lives are changed forever when they are imprisoned in brutal POW camps.A stellar cast was assembled from the cream of British acting talent; including Stephanie Beacham (Saving Grace, Bad Girls), Stephanie Cole (Waiting For God), Louise Jameson (Doctor Who), Elizabeth Chambers (To Play The King), while directing duties fell to Pennant Roberts (Howard’s Way) and David Askey (The Gentle Touch).
