It is not thought that the logic of the subject as a whole is of any particular importance to the student until he shall have gained a good general knowledge of geologi cal phenomena and of geological principles. It is the aim to begin with those phenomena with which the average student is most likely to be familiar, and by using this familiarity to branch out so as to cover the whole field, in so far as it can be done in such an elementary course of lectures.
