If you have never read “Swallows and Amazons” by Arthur Ransome, you may enjoy this film, but for those of us who know and love his books so well it was very disappointing. I realise that it's impossible to make a film from a book without making changes, but there were just too many changes in this one. The characters of the children, the main protagonists, have been altered so that Susan, the competent elder sister, becomes more of a child and far less able, while older brother John morphs into a moody teenager. I could cope with Russian (-) spies, and the changes to the person and character of Captain Flint, but, all in all, there were just too many alterations and we gave up watching. I will give the DVD away.

Swallows and Amazons

Swallows and Amazons follows four children who dream of escaping from the tedium of a summer holiday. When finally given permission to camp on their own on a remote island in the middle of a vast lake, they are overjoyed. But when they arrive, they discover they may not be alone and a desperate yet whimsical battle for ownership of the island ensues, where both skill and luck play a hand. Simultaneously, the dangers of an adult world, on the brink of war, encroach on their paradise and intertwine with their lives, in the form of a mysterious pair of Russian spies hot on the tail of the enigmatic Jim Turner. The children must ban together from both groups, learn skills of survival, responsibility, and the all-important value of friendship to save a family member. Steeped in the wonder of a childs imagination and set against a breath-taking backdrop, this is an exhilarating adaptation of a treasured classic.

Critic Reviews:

  • " It is all shocking, and absolutely splendid. The music turns your heart to mush and the performances are flawless, including a cameo from Harry Enfield as the farmer. " – Libby Purves
  • " Where the film really takes wing is when the Swallows and Amazons are trying to steal each other's boats, making expeditions by moonlight or are planning just what they're going to eat after dropping their provisions in the lake. " – Geoffrey Macnab
  • " Arthur Ransome's well-loved tale of children running wild in the Lake District is given a modern tweak to satisfy young audiences more used to the special effect-heavy world of Harry Potter. " – Sky Staff
