Description

This text provides a broad look at present knowledge about childhood and adolescent drug abuse, this volume covers theoretical, empirical, and clinical data, with attention paid to developmental ideas. In addition to reviewing current research findings, the book deals with practical aspects of prevention, assessment and treatment. It is organized into sections: first, two introductory chapters presenting an overview and theoretical background, followed by sections on: antecedents, consequences, prevention and treatment of substance abuse. Appendices cover abbreviations used in the field, a glossary of terms, and a directory of major treatment centres is also included.

Author Biography

ANN MARIE PAGLIARO, RSN, MSN, PhD (Candidate), is professor and Director, Substance Abusology Research Unit, Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta. LOUIS A. PAGLIARO, PhD, is a professor with the Department of Educational Psychology and Associate Director, Substance Abusology Research Unit, University of Alberta. He also works as a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of adolescents and adults with dual diagnoses. The Pagliaros consult widely in the field of substance abuse and teach several advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in research design and clinical practice, focusing on the assessment and treatment of substance use across the lifespan. They are the authors of several other books, including Problems in Pediatric Drug Therapy and Pharmacological Aspects of Aging.
