Description

Excerpt from Students' Expenses: A Collection of Letters From Undergraduates, Graduates, and Professional School Students, Describing in Detail Their Necessary Expenses at Harvard University; With an Introduction Nearly six years have passed Since Professor George H. Palmer, on Commencement Day, 1887 delivered his interesting and convincing address on College Expenses at Harvard. Securing his figures from the students themselves, he made plain the fact that the individual expenditure of a quarter part of the members of the class of 1887 had been less than $650 a year; and that, among those included in the group, several were able to keep their outlays for an academic year down to, or a little below, the modest sum of $450. His presentation of the truth was so attractive to graduates who listened to him that they at once arranged for the publication, not only of the address but Of nine octavo pages of extracts from the students' letters upon which his summary was based.
