25th anniversary reissue of this unique coming together of Brian Eno and ex-Public Image Ltd bass player Jah Wobble – another artist who had carved out a hefty reputation as a solo musician after starting out in an iconic band. Starting life as the soundtrack to Derek Jarman’s Glitterbug, Eno passed stereo mixes of the film cues to Wobble who embellished and built upon them to construct the tracks, drafting in Jaki Liebezeit from Can to play drums on some tracks. The resulting fusion combines icy ambience with a kind of psycho geographical funk.
In one sense, Spinner comes off like an album synthesising several different strains of avant-garde music contemporaneous to the mid-90s – the post-dub of African Head Charge can even be discerned in this record’s humid churn. However, Spinner also manages to sound quite unlike anything other than itself, the hissing atmospherics tying together everything from exploratory ambiences to dubbed out jazz fusion.
