In the western part of the district are extensive mines, which not only supply local demands, but also export to Germany. Indeed, Saxony is largely dependent upon these mines for its fuel sup ply. To the east of this district, in German Silesia, are also mines, which furnish most of the coal used in this city, on account of their nearness and the resulting low transportation rates.
