The authors discuss key theories within the Anglo-American tradition of pragmatics, concentrating on the relationship between language use and socio-cultural contexts, and their uptake by Hispanists. Author Biography:

ROSINA M RQUEZ REITER is Senior Lecturer in Spanish Language and Linguistics at the University of Surrey, UK, where she teaches and researches (Spanish) sociopragmatics and sociolinguistics. Her current research interests include sociopragmatic variation with particular reference to Spanish as well as pragmatics in general, cross- and inter-cultural communication as well as politeness theory. She is the author of Linguistic Politeness in Britain and Uruguay. MAR A ELENA PLACENCIA is Lecturer in Spanish and Linguistics at Birkbeck College, University of London, UK. Her main areas
