At a plantation house, two Eurasian children, Ngana & Jerome (Alex de Castro & Alexio Barboza) are playing and singing (“Dites-Moi”). Their father, a wealthy middle-aged French planter, Emile de Becque (Brian Stokes Mitchell), is host at lunch to a charming American nurse, Ensign Nellie Forbush (Reba McEntire). She explains her point of view on life (“A Cockeyed Optimist”), and the two discover a strong attraction to each other despite major differences (“Twin Soliloquies”). Emile encourages them to seize the moment and give in to their love (“Some Enchanted Evening”). Nellie is not yet ready and breaks away.
Elsewhere, a group of American sailors, Seabees, and Marines sing the praises of Bloody Mary (Lillias White), a Tonkinese who sells native crafts (“Bloody Mary”). Bloody Mary excites the Americans, talking about a mysterious and off-limits island nearby, Bali Ha’i. The Americans, led by the enterprising sailor Luther Billis (Alec Baldwin), suspect that the French planters have hidden their womenfolk on this island, and the joking reminds them that they have everything they could possibly want–except dames (“There Is Nothin’ Like A Dame”).
