The statues themselves were very ordinary pieces of sculpture, but the names of the queens inscribed on the pedestals made us dream -vaguely. There floated before us on the afternoon air of the spring-time and autumn, the hope of a life so noble and so pure. Our great joy then was to dis cuss art, our worst grief the thought of the uncertainty of the truths of meta physics and religion.
