First serialised between 1872 and 1874 this work is lesser known than the classic 'Johnny Gibb' but every bit as compelling. Through a variety of stories Alexander takes us into the world of the Aberdeenshire cottar in all its awful realism. An uncompromising satirical style is allied with the use of the Doric vernacular, presenting a challenge to the modern reader on a number of fronts.
