Description

A translation and thoroughly revised edition of a 1985 German book "Meeresbotanik", this book is divided into two parts. The first part presents the geographical distribution of seaweeds and seagrasses around the world, environmental factors, floral history and relevant paleoceanographic considerations. Individual chapters are devoted to the northern hemisphere, the artic, the tropics and the southern hemisphere. The second part covers seaweed ecophysiology, including the relationships of light, temperature, salinity and other abiotic factors on seaweed distribution, as well as biotic factors such as competition, herbivory, predation and parasitism. The primary purpose of the second part is to elucidate the ecophysiologic bases for the distribution patterns examined in part one. The book includes maps showing the geographical distribution of 44 species of seaweed in the northern hemisphere.
