Description

Excerpt from Scotland, Vol. 9: Explanation of Sheet, Kirkcudbright (North-East Part) And Dumfriesshire (South-West Part) The area embraced in Sheet 9 of the Geological Survey of Scotland was surveyed by Mr. H. M. Skae, Mr. John Horne, Mr. C. Campbell, and myself. Mr. Skas mapped the ground to the east of the Nith, except the Permian rocks of the Thornhill and Dumfries basins. Mr. Home's tract embraced the country lying westwards from the Nith Valley, except the central tract enclosed within a line drawn from Moniaive, south-westwards by Loch Skae to New Galloway, and down the Ken Valley to Parton; thence eastwards by kirkpatrick-durham, to the line of railway, and northwards by Loch Button and Dunscore to Moniaive. In the area thus enclosed, the Silurian rocks were first mapped by Mr. Campbell, whose work was subsequently revised and connected with that in the surrounding districts by Mr. Horne While the Survey of the drift deposits, in the same area, was shared by Mr. Home and Mr. Irvine. The Carboniferous and Permian rocks of the Thomhill basin were mapped by myself, in conjunction with Messrs. Shae, Home, and Campbell. To the following Explanation, Mr. Horne contributes paragraphs 1 - 12, 14716, 18 - 27, 30-32, 33 - 36, 72 - 78, 80 - 88, 90-101 Mr. Skae, Nos. 13, 17, 33, 58, 68, 71, 79, and 89; Mr. R. Etheridge, jun., Nos. 28 and 29 while I have supplied Nos. 37 - 70 (except Nos. 58 and The Fossil Lists in the Appendix are by Mr. R. Etheridge, jun. The list of papers referring to the geology of the district has been drawn up by Mr. Horne. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
