Description

River river raupo rye is a captivating story about Iona, an ordinary girl living in the area of the Northern Wairoa River in New Zealand, who rises to a woman as she battles the depths and heights of living her own circumstances. Her childhood was unusual and so isolating, the river has become her friend. At 17, she is plunged into a life she doesn't want. How will she manage? What is the reason for her mother's strange behaviour? Will she survive after the devastating revelations disclosed by her aunt? This beautifully crafted story gives a wonderful insight into family life and friendships in the early 1900s in New Zealand. It peaks and flows, and pulls the reader into a real taste of what life must have been like - the sadness and joy, love and hate, hardships and triumphs - all woven into a compelling tale. A real treat!

Author Biography:

Jean Louise Allen has been writing for most of her life. As a young woman, with four small children, Jean started writing freelance non-fiction articles for magazines and then wrote a non-fiction children's reader, which was used in schools in both New Zealand and Australia. Going back to full-time teaching with a young family halted her writing for some time. Then in 1993, Jean wrote her first piece of fiction - 'The Flatty' - which won her a prestigious Bank of New Zealand Katherine Mansfield Novice Award and was published in the New Zealand Listener. Her first book, Bitty by the river, was a collection of stories, two of which - 'The Flatty' and 'Fancy Work' - were read on Radio New Zealand National. River river raupo rye is Jean's first novel, but definitely not her last.
