As a member of the British Commonwealth, Australia supported the mother country, Great Britain, in many wars. During the first half of World War II, Australian troops fought against the German armed forces in North Africa, Greece and Crete. After Japan joined the war, the main war scene for Australia shifted to the Pacific region where they helped to defeat Japan.
