"A below average console port"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Granted that out of the box, this game is a terrible console port. But, if you search the net, there are a few good mods that help enhance the graphics, one of which is the Ultimate Patch, which fixes that in game textures and lighting, as well as increasing the resolution of the FMV's.

I would recommend that you play this game with a control pad though, as others have said, the keyboard support is terrible.

"Insult to an awesome game"
3 stars"

Capcom and ubisoft are just plain lazy. RE4 is an EXCELLENT game but this port is just crap. the fack that they did nothing tooptimise the controls or the graphics is awful since it ruins the fun of suck an awesome game. you should only get this if you do not own a gamecube or ps2, because those versions are fuXin awesome

"No zombies?"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

You're definitely going to need a gamepad. You're going to need the 80gig patch to enhance the graphics because it looks crap without it. And you should be aware there are NO zombies (at least for the first quarter of the game which is about what I played). That's right… an RE game with no zombies. The “zombies” are actually deranged country folk infected with parasites. They are zombie-like but it's just not the same.

It's not bad really but what put me off are the frequent set pieces that have you fighting a boss or getting out of an ambush or some other sticky situation that require you to die half a dozen times before you finally get past it. Particularly aggravating are the button mashing sections. Some locals will push a giant boulder off a cliff and you must repeatedly (and extremely quickly) mash a button to sprint out of it's way. If you're not fast enough you die. Or you have to dodge an attack by hitting two other buttons when they flash up on the screen giving you about a millisecond or else you die. You die a lot in this game. Fortunately the save points are quite frequent and there's no limit to how often you can save.

All this is designed to be challenging and fun, but I personally find it stressful and aggravating. I might just be getting too old for these games, I don't know. It get's even worse when Ashley joins you. You have to cope with all the hoards of angry locals and protect her as well. I gave up a few hours into the game when I realised I wasn't enjoying it in the least. That doesn't make it a bad game of course.

"Use a gamepad"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Definitely use a gamepad for this game. The lack of mouse support for a 3rd person shooter is absoluter sacrilege. The game settings like resolution and keyboard/gamepad mapping cannot be accessed in-game; they can only be changed in the pre-launch setup before the game has even loaded. The manual aiming when shooting makes this game frustrating at first, but also challenging. Also, you cannot move whilst aiming or side-step, but this is typical with the resident evil franchise.

However……,

If you’re used to previous RE games on PS2/console, then all the stuff mentioned above and the gamepad controls won’t be a problem. If you’re a keyboard masher like me, then a gamepad is a no-brainer (and also useful for other games too.) Once the controls have been mastered, RE4 is a pretty good game (don’t leave home without your trusty shotgun). Gameplay-wise, I think the game has more of an RPG flavour than the pure survival-horror influence of previous RE games. Happy hunting.

"Not much of a"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I've only had a quick look at the game but I'm already put off. The graphics and everything are fine, it's mainly the controls. I don't know why I expected more from the PC version of the game. Perhaps because of the hype and how long it took to come out. But as far as I can see it's just a console port, like all the other RE games. There's no ingame save (typewriter again), there are hardly any in game options, and the ingame control guide only lists the gamepad controls (that should tell you something).

The worst thing by far, however are the keyboard controls. Keyboard and gamepad only. No mouse support! Funny that there is none in what's supposed to be the PC version. Is it really so much to ask? You use your WASD keys to move forward and back and turn on the spot. R Shift to ready your weapon, and enter to fire. The problem is with aiming. There's no auto aim, and you must use the arrow keys to aim your weapon (here's where a mouse would have come in handy). I found it extremely tricky. It's very sensitive and very difficult to aim quickly at a moving target. Also, you can't sidestep, and as far as I can tell you can't run. Nor can you move and shoot at the same time. All this adds up to more frustration than fun.

In my opinion you'd have to be really, really keen to play this game to overlook all the control issues. I'm not. Unless they add mouse support in the future, it'll be another one shelved indefinately due to control issues. I'm developing quite a little pile.

"Why did they bother" Purchased on Mighty Ape

It needs to be clearly stated by anyone selling this game that it does not support mice. Go figure, how do you make a game for pc and not support mice, you can only use the keyboard and the commands are so complicated that it reminds me of the old autocad with command line controls,if I wanted to use a contoller,I would have bought an Xbox. Havent played more than 15 mins of it as I can't control it ..... Ubisoft has another winner, there's no mention of patches or any support on their website Uggghhh

"Refund Please!!!"
1 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I seriously cannot believe that this was released for the PC! If you're gonna port something to PC at least make a token effort. This falls short of that by a long way. As the other reviews have stated the interface sucks. You can't even use the mouse! Don't waste your money on this rubbish!
