"80's gaming nirvana"
5 stars"

Having enjoyed all of the coin-op arcade games detailed in this book back in the day, I really enjoyed the nostalgic, and at the same time futuristic themes in this book. A nail biting and grand adventure. Looking forward to the movie!

"Nostalgia porn"
1 stars"

The book is pretty blatantly pandering to the 80's teen demograpic to the point where several times in the first 100 pages the author just straight up lists aspects of 80's teen and sci-fi pop culture…

“the Willy Wonka of this story liked authors such as J.R.R Tolkien, C.S Lewis, Orson Scott Card… Etc”

…which sucks because the whole story is built on these pop culture references, as the characters are just lazy archetypes and the plot is the same tired “magical boy” formula we've seen thousands of times

Now if you want a book that just makes you reminisce about the 80's, fine this book is perfect for you, but if you are after an engaging story, read something from one of the aforementioned authors

"Awesome 80s revival"

I suspect that people who went to school in the 80s are the key demographic for this book, as the nostalgia trip is extremely strong. Some of the references are quite obviously American but there’s enough of the shared 80s pop culture being referenced here that Kiwis of a certain age will still get it. Great story, well told, some good twists – one or two are spoiled in the movie, so definitely read the book first if you can. If you liked the movie and are considering getting the book as a result, the book will blow you away – and then make you kind of sad, because you’ll realise that the movie could have been so much better.

Description

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERGThe Sci-Fi Sensation of the Year - a jaw-droppingly cinematic space opera, part classic coming-of-age story, part brilliant pop-culture mash-up PRE-ORDER NOW - READY PLAYER TWO- THE SEQUEL ______________________ THE BOOK BEHIND THE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERG Now available for the first time in a beautiful hardback edition, perfect for hardcore fans and collectors A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready? It's the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty, and disease are widespread. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality- OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation. For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late twentieth century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle. Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed. ____________________________________ If you loved READY PLAYER ONE and can't wait for more, check out ARMADA, Ernest Cline's geek masterpiece!
