"Nice picture book explaining an earthquake"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Love this book. Sent to a nephew in the North Island as a momento to remember what happened to his cousins in Christchurch. Nicely illustrated book that explains what it felt like for a cat living through the Christchurch earthquake. Not sad or depressing a nice story.

"A very good book for young children."
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

An good book for children to help understand the Earthquake and its effect on the animals too.

"A truly delightfull story"
5 stars"

This story is wonderfully written in a dr suess style, It tells of the frightening feelings of the cat and the changes happening because of the earthquake. It demonstrates to children that fear and uncertainty are normal acceptable responses to a natural disaster. It also sends a message of hope and reassurance that the situation is temporary , that family and community helping eachother matters most and it has a happy ending. I was delighted as I am sure My Future grandchildren will be… Thank you Diana Noonan and Gavin Bishop

Description

A very special book created in the aftermath of the 2010 Canterbury earthquake, with proceeds going to help the recovery of the people affected. $100,000 raised for Christchurch from this book so far! (May 2011)

On a cold Christchurch morning, while the city was sleeping,
before the birds roused him with twitters and cheeping,
curled up on the end of his friend Emma’s bed,
Tiger woke with a start ... and a feeling of dread.
Tiger fled from the house with a leap and a bound
as, louder than thunder, from deep underground,
came a roar and a shudder and terrible shaking!
Around him, the city was rolling and quaking.

The Canterbury earthquake affected children in so many ways: homes gone, playgrounds destroyed, schools damaged, pets missing, favourite books and toys lost. Quaky Cat is a picture book for children throughout New Zealand - to bring comfort to those who experienced the earthquake, and understanding to the children who didn’t.

An evocative, uplifting story that will touch the hearts of all who read it. Includes a note to readers from both author and illustrator about their personal reactions to the quake, and musings on the earthquake from Bob Parker,
Margaret Mahy and Jason Gunn. 50% of net proceeds, including author and illustrator royalties, will be donated to Christchurch charities.
