Premiered in 1991 to critical acclaim and filmed one year later, Giancarlo Del Monaco's classic Fanciulla production brought one of Puccini's lesser-known operas to the center of attention. Plácido Domingo's glistening performance of Dick Johnson, a role he began singing in 1974, was described in Opera as "one of his most convincing roles…as heroic as he is vulnerable, he takes real risks vocally, and his generosity as a performer illuminates the role and the whole opera" American soprano Barbara Daniels delivered "a terrific Minnie, authoritative, sentimental" (Opera), while Leonard Slatkin was praised for the style and affection of his conducting in his first-ever Met appearance Puccini's romantic wild west story had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910, with Arturo Toscanini conducting and Enrico Caruso singing Dick Johnson
