Description

Excerpt from Professional Basketball, Vol. 1: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on the Antitrust and Monopoly of the Committee on the Judiciary, United States Senate, Ninety-Second Congress, First Session on S. 2373, a Bill to Allow the Merger of Two or More Professional Basketball Leagues I am presiding at the request of the chairman, Senator Hart. In order that we may understand exactly what is involved here, on September 30, 1961, Congress enacted Public Law 87 - 331 which is also at 75 statute at large, 732, and which is now codified as section 1291 of title XV of the United States Code, which was to exempt organized professional athletics from the antitrust laws in respect to making agreements for telecasting games. The counsel for the committee will have this original statute which appears as 1291 of the United States Code, title XV, United States Code, printed at this point in the body of the record. Then later this statute was amended on November 8, 1966, by Public Law 89 - 800, section 6(b) also appearing in the statutes at large, 1515, and is codified as revised section 1291 of title XV of the United States Code, and counsel will see that revised statute is printed at this point in the body of the record. Then counsel will see that a copy of the bill which proposes to amend the revised statute is printed at this point in the body of the record.
