Furthermore, much of the information regarding condi tions in Germany that has found its way into newspapers and magazines has been colored, more or less, by prejudice in favor of or opposed to Germany. During the war, each of the belligerents recognized that its factories constituted its second line of defense and that the supremacy of the military arm rested largely on the effectiveness of the industrial arm. Since the war, there has been a growing appreciation among the nations that their factories are the keystone of their economic and social well-being. The eagerness with which the nations in the invaded area have set about to rebuild the factories destroyed is only proof of this. The present industrial Situation in Germany is therefore of more than ordinary interest.
