Description

Discussing the important trends in printed photonics, this book covers such hot topics as printed electronics and photonic applications, including photovoltaics and inkjet printing. Following an introduction, the book is divided into three parts. The first discusses the field of optoelectronics, such as solar power generation, light emitting devices as well as micro- and nano-optics, while the second part goes on to describe the field of biophotonics, where biometrics, diagnostics and colorimetric devices are introduced. The final part concerns the printing of light-based sensors, for use in wearables and smart phones for example, concluding with a look at future technological advances and applications. Invaluable reading for material developers and electrical engineers, whether in academic research or industrial development.

Author Biography:

Dr. Ghassan E. Jabbour is director of the Renewable Energy Center and professor of the Chemical and Materials Engineering faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. He was the founding director of the Solar and Photovoltaic Engineering and Al Rawabi Holdings Endowed Research Chair at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. Prior to this Dr. Jabbour was the director of Flexible and Organic Electronics Development at the Flexible Display Center (FDC/ASU) and a professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering faculty at the Arizona State University, in Phoenix, USA. Prof. Jabbour has more than 50 authored research papers. Furthermore, he holds many honors, including the Distinguished Professor of Finland (Academy of Finland) for Photonics and Printed Energy Devices, Fellow of European Optical Society and Fellow of SPIE. Dr. Madhusudan Singh is associate professor at the faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, India. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. His postdoctoral work at MIT, Cambridge, USA, included the first plasmon-enhanced organic photovoltaics, and the discovery of extrafluorescence in OLEDs. At the Arizona State University, he developed ultra-bright printed OLEDs, and reported the first nanoscale CELIV measurements in lateral organic PVs. At UT Dallas, he studied V-shifts in solution-processed chalcogenide TFTs. His current interests lie in flexible electronics, nano-engineered PVs, low-cost fabrication, solid- state lighting, and integrated devices and sensors. Dr. Singh had published more than 30 research papers in internationally well know journals. Dr. Hanna Haverinen is currently in the process of spinning out her own company. She received her PhD in Electrical Engineering from University of Oulu, Finland, on inkjet printed quantum dots for optoelectronics. She was the first to report LEDs having the active area based on an inkjet printed layer of quantum dots. Dr. Haverinen introduced the first inkjet printed DC-driven QVGA quantum dot-based LEDs array in RGB. Furthermore, she was a research engineer at KAUST working on printed energy devices and optoelectronics, as well surface characterization of printed material. Dr. Haverinen has authored more than 15 scientific articles.
