Gordon (Peter Fenton) is a chain smoking asthmatic living in a flea bag establishment with a bunch of other down and outers. He's low on energy from the disease and ennui, and emotionally drained from ten years of unrequited love. Cynthia (Sacha Horler) is plagued by eczema, but she loves to fuck and play scrabble. She is terrific. With Gordon taking a passive role, she moves into his place, puts a lampshade over the bare bulb and proceeds to jolly up his life. For a while, it seems as though they might save each other. With an oppressive, overheated Brisbane providing the backdrop to an explosive love story, Gordon and Cynthia's journey is jolted onto the screen by Peter Fenton and Sacha Horler. Featuring an acclaimed and haunting soundtrack from Australia's Dirty Three, Praise is a gem that will stand the test of time as a modern Australian classic. See it. Love will never be the same.
"...An absorbing tale of sexual obsession....[PRAISE] will stick with you. It`s more than worthy of its title." -- New York Times (06/30/2000)
"...Impressive....PRAISE is a lovely piece of movie making: precisely controlled but with a lived-in scruffiness. Curran has a remarkable sensitivity for the textures and rhythms of ordinary life..." -- Los Angeles Times (07/14/2000)
