The history of Portsmouth as a settled community goes back at least to the 1100s. In recent times the city has grown exponentially and is now a vibrant urban centre covering many thousands of hectares. Yet at its heart, much of the Old Town of Portsmouth, covering less than one mile square, still survives. Inevitably, Hitler's bombs and the passage of centuries wrought significant changes. Nevertheless, in this fascinating pictorial compilation, Peter Rogers brings back many happy memories of how things were as well as showing just how much remains. Many of the illustrations in the book are previously unpublished and help to weave an engrossing portrait of this much loved town.
