For ten years he served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and, simultaneously, for the last four years of that period (1961-1965) as Dean of the General College. He gave up his Deanships to accept appointment as a vice-chancellor of the' University in September, 1965, Acting Chancellor (succeeding Chancellor Paul Sharp who became President of Drake Uni versity) in February, 1966, and Chancellor in May, 1966.
