Socrates wrote nothing; Plato's accounts of Socrates helped to establish western politics, ethics, and metaphysics. Both have played crucial and dramatically changing roles in western culture. Melissa Lane is University Senior Lecturer in History, Associate Director of the Centre for History and Economics, and a Fellow of King's College, University of Cambridge, UK. She is the author of Method and Politics in Plato's Statesman (1998).
