"Stunning Cast and Story Makes for a Darkly Beautiful Film"
5 stars"

Wow. First and foremost, this is not a children's movie. Despite the fact that the main character is a girl of eleven, Pan's Labyrinth is most definitely an adult's movie. Pan's Labyrinth returns to the darker nature of fairytales that existed before Disney gave us its interpretations – Pan's Labyrinth comes from the same world that gives us wolves that eat people, bones that sing songs about how they were murdered, husbands who kill their wives and castles of people with a single sentence.

Pan's Labyrinth can be best described as a war story with a fairytale interwoven through it all – or is it a fairytale with a war story throughout? Both storylines can be considered separate, and yet they are both completely intertwined they cannot be two different creatures. Instead, they are two sides of the same coin.

Then eleven-year-old Ivana Baquero shines as Ofelia, and it's easy to see why del Toro adjusted the script to accomodate an "older” actress. And to those unfamiliar with Spanish actors, you would be hardpressed to think of Sergi López playing anything other than dark characters – let alone comedic and melodramatic ones – after his turn as the dark and sadistic Captain Vidal.

But to me, Doug Jones shines as the Faun and the Pale Man. The fact that he learned all the lines in Spanish, and still had to be dubbed over shows the commitment he had – it was his choice to make sure the mouth movements were correct. I was excited to see him in action (again), and was delighted at the result. Forget Andy Serkis – if I need a guy in a costume, I'm calling Doug Jones.

Dark, twisted and positively beautiful, Pan's Labyrinth is a must-see.

"Violent, Beautiful and Serious."
5 stars"

An excellent and beautiful movie about a yonug girl trapped in the Spanish Civil war, with the anarchists fighting the fascists. It's a very violent movie, certainly not something you should let anyone under 15 watch (perhaps even that is too young). As the main character escapes further from the real world, into this dark fantasy world we're treated to amazing and beautiful scenes as she struggles to pass three trials to prove that she is the lost princess of an underground kingdom. This is one of my favourite movies to come out in recent years, it deals with some very serious ideas, and it was nice to see a movie deal with anarchists not as bomb throwers, but people fighting for their freedom. I highly recommend this movie, but be warned, it is very violent.

"A wonderfully dark fairytale."

Don't be put off by the subtitles, Del Toro brings a wonderful world to life, with humans that are just as terrifying as some of the creatures you'll meet.

"Magical Masterpiece"

A movie set in during the Spanish Civil War about a girl who discovers a labyrinth. The movie parallels between the real world and the fantasy world. The movie is in Spanish subtitles but it is easy to follow, and I think makes the movie more magical. Highly recommended.

"Loved this movie. My favorite foreign film of all time."

You don't need much or any knowledge about some Spanish history which makes this perfect for almost anyone. It's a perfect blend between fantasy and historical fiction. It doesn't hold back on some violence which makes it more appealing to more adult viewers.

"Simply Stunning"

Cinematography was amazing. If you like gothic type fairy tales, this is a must have. Is Spanish (hellboy director) with English subtitles, not that you need them, pictures tell the story beautifully
