Description

Four talks given before The Art Institute of Chicago: Composition Mass Water-Colors Charcoal Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915) was an engineer, artist, illustrator, and short story writer. As a successful engineer he took on difficult feats such as the foundations for the Statue of Liberty, the foundation of Penfield Reef Lighthouse in Long Island Sound, the design of Butlers Flat Lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and the Race Rock Light in Fisher's Island Sound. As he devoted more and more time to his hobby, which was painting, he traveled frequently to Europe and became known for his work in portraits, genre, and illustration.
