Realise I’m a 50+ yr old male , but that doesn’t detract from the fact that this wonderful film led me to incredible feelings of déjà vu with touches of the familiar / similar , experienced in my own childhood scattered liberally throughout this magical experience . Studio Ghibli has always managed to stir the heartstrings to one degree or another , but this film has played a symphony on mine – just at the right time . Thankyou ☺️

Description

The key to Taeko's future, lies in her past. Only Yesterday revolves around Taeko, a single woman working a desk job in Tokyo in 1982, taking a vacation in the countryside with the family of her sister in-law.

During her vacation, Taeko finds herself looking back at her time as a young schoolgirl growing up in 1966. The film flips back and forth between the two time periods with a lot of nostalgia and beautiful country scenery as Taeko sorts out her flashbacks and tries to make some tough decisions about her future.

From the Studio Ghibli Collection.

Only Yesterday Movie Review

“Highly Recommended. Nostalgic without being sentimental, and winsome but not wincingly so, Takahata’s gentle film – in which a 27-year-old unmarried office worker from Tokyo spends a ten day holiday in the countryside, working on a farm and reminiscing about her childhood – proves to be, as it paints a rather moving portrait of the inconsequentiality of adulthood and the monumentality of youth, a film of great beauty.” Iain.Stott, 1linereview.blogspot.co.nz
