"Such a great sci-fi movie with an epic soundtrack!"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This has to be one of my favourite sci-fi movies, great story, and the soundtrack by M83 is SOOOOOO good!

Then out spake brave Horatius, The Captain of the Gate: To every man upon this earth Death cometh soon or late. And how can man die better Than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, And the temples of his gods

"Great movie, has staying power"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I first watched this movie not long after it came out. I bought the 4K version because I recently bought a 4K HDR TV and thought it would be a visual treat to see this in 4K. Turns out, regular 1080p up-scaled looks great on a 4K TV and to be honest, I don't think most current release UHD movies are really any better (including this one). So I don't actually think I'll be spending too much money on 4K movies, but the movie itself was a real pleasure to see again. Great story telling, great plot twists, good pacing, a solid 4 stars.

Description

Oblivion

In the year 2077, Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) works as a security repairman on an Earth left empty and devastated after a war with aliens. Jack has two weeks left before his mission ends and he joins his fellow survivors on a faraway colony. However, Jack's concept of reality comes crashing down after he rescues a beautiful stranger (Olga Kurylenko) from a downed spacecraft. The woman's arrival triggers a chain of events that culminates in Jack's nearly single-handed battle to save mankind.

Critic Reviews:

  • " The story that eventually surfaces is nowhere near as interesting as the mesmerizing look of the film. " – Chris Stuckmann
  • " Large-scale, original sci-fi is a hard thing to come by these days, and despite its familiar story Oblivion does dream up some great ideas " – Katey Rich
  • " The sly, surprising and visually magnificent Tom Cruise vehicle that has forced me – and many other people, I suspect – to revise my first opinion of director Joseph Kosinski " – Andrew O'Hehir
