Description

Excerpt from Nottingham: Its Castle, a Military Fortress, a Royal Palace, a Ducal Mansion, a Blackened Ruin, a Museum and Gallery of Art A cursory glance at the following pages will show that this book is not intended to take the place of other topographical works which have been published before, but merely to supplement and summarise the labours of those diligent and careful writers, who, with the materials which they had at their disposal, have done so much to make the subject interesting to the inhabitants of this ancient town and the adjacent country. During the period in which the author has been connected with the Town and Castle, and especially during the negotiations which have taken place between the Corporation and the Trustees of the Nottingham Park Estate, and which have resulted in the latter literally handing over to the good people of nottingham rrs castle, many facts of interest, before unpublished, have been brought to light, and it seemed that these, together with the chief points connected with the subject gathered from other labourers in the same field, and arranged in chronological sequence, would form an acceptable handy-book to those who might visit the Castle in its new capacity as a Museum of Art, and enable them to become acquainted with the principal historical events connected with it and the adjoining borough, of which it has now' become part and parcel, without wading through the ponderous volumes from which many of these notes are gathered.
