Description

Excerpt from Notable St. Louisans in 1900: A Portrait Gallery of Men Whose Energy and Ability Have Contributed Largely Towards Making St. Louis the Commercial and Financial Metropolis of the West, Southwest and South Below each name will be found a brief title or description. For purposes Of uniformity these titles are limited to two lines, and an effort has been made to select such descriptions as are most up-to-date and distinctive. TO have enumerated every past and present Office Of some of those whose pictures are given would have required nearly a page Of space, and Would have changed the work from a portrait gallery _to a collection Of biographies. An alphabetical index of portraits is appended. In the body Of the work the classification is as accurate and complete as it was possible to make it, but' in a city of aggressiveness and public spirit, in which the leading men rally round every movement for the common good, and where exclusiveness is the exception rather than the rule, no plan Of classification by trades or professions can be invariably followed. The portraits are uniformly-good. More than Of them are from photographs taken expressly for this work by Mr. J. C. Strauss, who made a special sitting of each subject with but few exceptions. The half-tone engravings are by the Sanders Engraving Company of St. Louis, and the Columbia Engraving and Electrotype Company Of Chicago.
