This anthology brings together 28 lively short stories, including gothic tales to romances, detective fiction and ghost stories, 19th-century women writers. It contains short fiction by authors such as Maria Edgeworth, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Margaret Oliphant. The anthology includes: a full scholarly introduction; a biography for each of the authors; full explanatory notes and suggestions for further reading; a critical commentary, publication details and historical context; and a full and wide-ranging bibliography which will enable those interested in pursuing research on any author or topic to do so. A thematic index will enable teachers to select material best suited to their courses.
Harriet Devine Jump is Senior Lecturer in English at Edge Hill University College. Her recent publications include Mary Wollstonecraft: Writer (1994) and Women's Writing of the Romantic Period, 1789-1836 (1997). Women's Writing of the Victorian Period, 1837-1901 will be published in 1998.
