At forty-five, Adrienne Willis must rethink her entire life when her husband abandons her for a younger woman. Reeling with heartache and in search of a respite, she flees to the small coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina, to tend to a friend's inn for the weekend. But when a major storm starts moving in, it appears that Adrienne's perfect getaway will be ruined -- until a guest named Paul Flanner arrives. Paul has just sold his medical practice and comes to Rodanthe to escape his own shattered past. Now, with the storm closing in, two wounded people will turn to each other for comfort -- and in one weekend, set in motion feelings that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives.

Author Biography

Nicholas Sparks lives in North Carolina with his wife and children.

Critical Reviews:

Kirkus Reviews UK Flying in the face of current fictional fashion, Nicholas Sparks writes romantic novels, often about ordinary people past their first youth, which appeal to a vast readership. He believes that 'love is possible at any age, at any time, and often happens when we least expect it'. At the age of 45 Adrienne Willis, mother of three children, has been deserted by her husband for a younger woman. Her father is dying, she is worried about money, and near despair. When an old friend asks her to house-sit her Inn in Rodanthe, North Carolina, for a long weekend she seizes the opportunity to get away from it all and be alone to review her shattered life in a place she knows and loves. The hurricane season is approaching, and the Inn has only one booking, so she will have plenty of time for reflection. Paul Flanner, the one hotel guest, is also a singleton: a brilliant surgeon and a workaholic, his neglect of his wife and son Mark has finally led to a breakdown in his marriage too. Shaken by his divorce, Paul has realized how far, and how unjustifiably, he has grown away from his wife and son. It is probably too late to mend his relationship with Martha, but perhaps there might still be time to learn to know Mark. He has escaped to Rodanthe for a long weekend to make new plans and, if possible, repair at least some of the mistakes he has made in the past. It isn't hard to guess what happens. Neither Adrienne nor Paul have the first idea of just how that weekend will change their lives; but their guard is down, and the approaching hurricane which is about to hit Rodanthe is not the only storm which is about to overwhelm them. The story is not quite one of love at first sight. There are unforeseen consequences to the meeting of Paul and Adrienne which will have you reaching for the nearest box of tissues. Make sure they're handy. And watch out for the movie.
